Thank you for visiting the Harry Chapin Fanlisting, a website dedicated to the 60s & 70s era singer/songwriter Harry Chapin. Harry is most well-known for his folk-rock songs Cats in the Cradle, Taxi, W.O.L.D, and 30,000 Pounds of Bananas.
Born December 7, 1942, Harry released his first album Heads & Tales in 1966. Though he did not have the best singing voice, he masterfully wove stories to music, easily painting pictures with words. A storyteller at heart, he was best seen live--on stage telling jokes with his brothers and friend "Big" John Wallace.
Harry married Sandy Cashmore, the woman he sings about in his song I Wanna Learn a Lovesong. He had two children with her, Jennifer and Joshua. He also became step-father to Sandy's previous three children, Jaime, Jason, and Jonathan.
In addition to his music, Harry was very involved in philanthropic work, donating most of the money that he made from his music. Many of the proceeds from his concerts went towards humanitarian work.
On July 16, 1981, Harry's life was tragically cut short while on his way to a free benefits concert. It's believed that he suffered a heart attack while driving. The Harry Chapin Foundation is still actively serving communites throughout the USA in his name.
