#1 - The Outsider

Liz has seen him around. It's hard to miss Max--the tall, mysterious senior stands out in her high school crowd. So why is he such a loner?

Max is in love with Liz. He loves the way her eyes light up when she laughs. And the way her long, black hair moves when she turns her head. Most of all, he loves to imagine what it would be like to kiss her.

But Max knows he can't get too close. He can't let her discover the truth about who he is. Or really, what he is...

Because the truth could kill her.

Summary

When Liz Ortecho is shot at her parent's diner, the Crashdown Cafe, Max Evans uses his alien powers to heal her. Liz and her best friend Maria DeLuca are amazed to discover that Max Evans, the human-looking kid they had gone to school with almost all their lives, is an alien. Unable to hide anything from Liz, Max reveals that his sister Isabel and their best friend Michael Guerin are also aliens. Without any idea of what planet they are from, or why they are on Earth, the three alien teens are living normal lives in Roswell, New Mexico.

After the shooting and healing at the Crashdown Cafe, Sheriff Valenti is hot on the trail of the alien teens. Max's sister Isabel is worried and scared. Maria is just as frightened. Turning to her best friend Alex Manes, Maria spills the secret of the aliens, and the group of six teenagers--some alien and some human--must pull together to stop Valenti, an alien hunter from a government agency called Project Clean Slate from discovering Max's secret.

Key Developments

  • Max Evans, Isabel Evans, and Michael Guerin are aliens. When their parents' ship crashed in 1947 in Roswell, Max, Isabel, and Michael were in incubation pods. It wasn't until years later that they emerged, looking like regular human children.

  • Liz Ortecho, Maria DeLuca, and Alex Manes learn the truth about their alien classmates. Despite initial fear, the human teens quickly come to realize that their alien friends are just as scared as they are--and are just fighting to survive.

  • It is revealed that Sheriff Valenti is in charge of a secret government organization called Project Clean Slate. This organization's mission is to hunt down aliens.

  • Elsevan DuPris is first introduced as an eccentric reporter for the Astral Projector. He is very nosy about the shooting at the Crashdown Cafe.

  • Michael is constantly looking for the crashed ship in the desert, but all the alien teens have found is the cave where they came out of the incubation pods. Michael, Max, and Isabel use this cave as a secret hideout, but also consider it to be very meaningful as it is the only connection to their past and origins.

  • Powers Introduced

    dreamwalking

All of the aliens have the power to dreamwalk. The aliens only need two hours of sleep a night and so they often dreamwalk to pass the time. Closing their eyes, the aliens have the power to enter a dreamlike state--the state when you are half-alseep and half-awake. This is called the dream plane. Each person has a unique dream orb. The aliens have the ability to call the orb to them and can choose to watch the dream or choose to enter the dream. If they enter the dream, they can communicate with the dreaming person and manipulate the structure of the dream.

    molecular manipulation
All of the aliens have the ability to move molecules. They can nudge molecules together or further apart. They cannot change a substance into something else; they can only manipulate the existing molecules.

    connecting
All of the aliens have the ability to connect to other aliens and to other humans. By touching another person, they can 'become' the other person. Once they are connected, the two people share the same sensations, memories, and feelings, even though they both remain in their separate bodies. It is also possible for an entire group of people to connect with each other. If humans are involved in this, they momentarily acquire the ability to see auras and identify unique scents.

    emotions
All of the aliens have the ability to feel the emotions of the other aliens around them. They can choose to tune these feelings out, but they always have this connection with each other.

    seeing auras
All of the aliens can see auras. Auras are the manifestation of energy that each person emits. Each person's aura is completely different and has a unique color. This energy surrounds a person in a soft glowing light. As a person's emotions change, their auras change as well. Dark colors streaking a person's aura might indicate fear or unhappiness. Lighter colors might indicate joy or pleasure. When an aura turns completely black, that usually means the person has died.

    unique individual scents
All of the aliens have the ability to pick up a person's scent. This is an aroma that is usually identified through an aura. Each person has a unique scent.

    Romance

  • Liz Ortecho is still a little raw from a recent breakup with Kyle Valenti. She's incensed by his selfish personality and can't believe that he thought she'd actually enjoy watching him play video games--without even being offered a turn! Kyle, for his part, is also pretty hurt by the breakup and he doesn't understand why Liz left him. He is jealous of how much time Max is spending with his ex-girlfriend.

  • After being healed by Max and discovering that he is an alien, Liz connects with Max and is able to feel how much he loves her. She too is a little surprised to discover that she is falling for Max--and hard. But, despite the mutual attaction, they both decide it's too dangerous to be together, especially with Kyle Valenti, the Sheriff's son, watching Liz's every move.

  • Alex Manes openly swoons over Isabel Evans' beauty and, in his geeky way, shows affection towards her. Isabel, however, does not at all appear interested.

    Max and Liz

Liz: Max, lets just stop. We're both totally babbling...
Max: Okay, you're right. No more babbling. No babbling allowed from here out. No--
    Liz: Max!
Max: Okay. Okay. But before I start, there is no way I could get you to believe the ketchup story is there?
    Maria and Max
"Are guys like born with the ability to play those drum riffs?" [Maria] asked.
"Because whenever I try it, it just sounds like an elephant stampede or something. And air guitar? Forget about it."
Max glanced over at her, his lips curving in a crooked smile. "I'm living proof it's not genetic."
"I forgot. Duh. For one second I forgot," Maria said. "And you know why? It's because you're not this creature out of a bad movie."
    "That's a relief," Max answered.
